Gavin Harrison - "The Start Of Something Beautiful"

After Harrison reviewed all the transcriptions in this article, he did something no other drummer had ever done. He asked us to include one more little snippet of the song “The Start Of Something Beautiful.” Hey, we aim to please, so here’s what he had to say about it: “This song starts in 9/8 and moves into 5/8 for the chorus. I’ve always been interested in odd-time signatures when you can make them groove and have a natural flow. When it works it sounds good and you don’t always realize what the time signature is. When it doesn’t work you end up with a jerky complicated uncomfortable feeling, which I try to avoid.”

Derek Roddy - Blast Beats

Many metal drummers are known for having wicked double bass technique and lightning-fast hands. A quick scan of Derek Roddy’s videos on YouTube reveals a drummer whose technical mastery and creativity transcend metal stereotypes. Roddy makes ridiculously complex patterns look effortless (in part because he’s ambidextrous), and where other drummers wear their effort on their sleeves, he keeps remarkable poise while blazing his way around the drumset.

Stewart Copeland - Message In A Bottle (Drum Transcription)

“Message In A Bottle” from Regatta De Blanc

This is a great tune, and was a big hit for The Police. Its drum part was one of those created from several takes that were combined. Copeland attacks the intro with an alternating snare/kick pattern that leads into a cool reggae groove. He omits the bass drum on the downbeat, making the pattern feel a bit unusual. In the chorus, he plays the bass drum almost continuously, which gives the pattern much more forward momentum than the verse.

Mike Mangini is set to undertake an extensive European clinic tour for Pearl with a total of 16 clinics throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Norway, Poland, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands.

Before Mike begins touring with Dream Theater he has made time to undertake an extensive clinic tour for Pearl beginning 25th October that will run until 17th November 2013.
